“I have experienced many obstacles, traumas, and hardships in my life. I spent 17 years trying to numb my emotions instead of dealing with them. I had a relapse that lasted 2 years in isolation. I remember feeling so sick and stuck in a cycle. I needed to get sober because I was going to end up losing my life to addiction. So, I decided to detox and go to Recovery Cafe. It was something I had not tried before, and I was uncomfortable at first. I had forgotten how to socialize. Maybe they could help? I was so desperate to live a fulfilling life and not only like who I am but love the person I am. The staff and members of the Cafe made me feel like I belonged. I have never in my life belonged anywhere. They love and accept me for being authentically myself. I did not even know who I was really, I just hid behind substance abuse hoping to find answers. Connection helped me find my way to a better life that I did not know was possible. Today I have 2 years of sobriety and a whole group of people that have my back. I have a solid family now, not by blood but through the trials we have faced and the bonds of that lived experience. It feels good to be seen. I love you all!”
