Recovery takes courage. Smiling again shouldn’t be the hard part.
Restoring Smiles is a program of Reclaiming Lives that helps Recovery Café members receive no cost dentures and partials.
WHY A SMILE MATTERS
For someone in recovery, missing teeth can affect far more than a smile.
For many people, it impacts confidence in job interviews, first impressions, relationships, and even photos with their children.
For one Recovery Café member, that meant covering his mouth with his hand whenever he spoke. After receiving dentures, he no longer felt the need to hide his smile.
He could make eye contact and be fully present with others.
That is the heart of Restoring Smiles, to help people in recovery feel confident, seen, and able to move forward.
IT’S NEVER JUST ABOUT TEETH
A healthy smile can change how someone sees themselves, and how they face the world.
Restoring Smiles, through a partnership with a local denturist, provides the support they need throughout the process.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Referral
Recovery Café volunteers, circle leaders, and staff can refer a member who needs dental help to Restoring Smiles.
2. Support & Preparation
Recovery Cafe staff and volunteers walk alongside each member, helping them understand the process, set appointments, and prepare for their procedure.
3. Dental Care
Michael Holden, LD, a local denturist, and his partners provide assessments and offer full or partial dentures, along with necessary preparatory procedures, including extractions, at a reduced rate.
4. Pay It Forward
Recipients have the opportunity to help someone else begin their Restoring Smiles journey. This might include:
- Sharing what to expect from the process
- Helping someone schedule appointments
- Helping write thank-you notes to those who made their new smile possible

I worked in the dental field for more than a decade, so I know how much a smile matters. But the people at Recovery Café showed me how much a smile can mean to someone rebuilding their life. I've watched members work incredibly hard to rebuild their lives: showing up, doing the hard things, and starting over with courage. Addiction has also touched my own family through my son, who I love with all my heart.
Restoring Smiles began with a woman I met at the café. Her story changed how I see healing: moving forward means feeling whole again, inside and out, and that includes being able to smile. I volunteer my time so that every dollar can go to someone's new smile, because everyone working this hard deserves a smile they're proud to share.
